Entrance to the Fansite Summit was well-guarded.

Sunny Ravencourt and Radicool from Sunny’s Diner join us to discuss our Fansite Summit experience, plus we are slowly figuring out that Sunny might be a hardcore player in casual  clothing. We also learn that Georg is a playful, vengeful god and that just makes us like him more.

FACT OR FICTION: Can you pick out the confirmed fact from the tall tales? This week’s trick challenge ends unexpectedly, but still fulfills its main purpose of delivering fake facts.

  1. I keep wanting to respond to you guys in the podcast. Feels like a very lively vent chat.

    I don’t think the Rift beta reached the numbers that SWTOR will in the upcoming beta weekend. I am hoping the NDA will lift for that weekend but seeing as it will still be a “closed” beta they might not.

  2. Yeah, I totally would love to just hang out in Vent/Skype with Sunny and Rad on a regular basis!

    I think you’re right, Nathan. The upcoming testing weekend with everyone who has an official SWTOR account plus the gazillions of giveaways from the promotional sites will be crazy, I bet. And by that, I mean kind of awful! But hey, I’m really glad they’re doing it now before the real launch.

  3. Great cast, as usual!

    On the grace period discussion: German Community Manager Lars Malcharek twittered “Don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll make a smooth transition possible.”, answering a question about copies from Amazon being delayed. (source: https://twitter.com/#!/Lisertan/status/134395565898338304)

    On the upcoming Big Beta Weekend: I think your tweets and wording during the cast about being automatically qualified for the weekend is misleading, as you say “registered on the forums before 11/11”. It’s not enough to have a forum account, it’s “opted in for testing befor 11/11”. (source: http://twitter.com/#!/Rockjaw/status/136401320247705602 for example)

  4. Hi KC: Thanks for jumping in. I’m glad to hear the German CM seems more willing to tell people not to worry. If Stephen had said that followed by “more details later,” people would not be nervous, I’m sure.

    AhI You are right! I didn’t clarify that after you make a swtor account, you have to ask to be considered for testing. We were probably all operating under the assumption that OF COURSE everyone who bothered to make an account would also sign up for testing.

  5. You know, I think there are two kinds of casual. There’s the casual player who would be hardcore, but doesn’t have time, e.g. they have a real life, but they like raiding, etc., and then there’s the casual player who does have time, but doesn’t really care too much about that stuff, so they don’t put in that much time, or they don’t do much in the time they play. So it really boils down to playing a casual amount of hours or playing with a casual let’s-just-have-fun attitude. This also leads to two definitions of hardcore, being the min-maxer hardcore and the 30+ hours a week (but not neccesarily min-maxing) hardcore. Just another way of looking at it. I know that casual typically means let’s-just-have-some-fun and hardcore usually means min-maxer/elitist jerk, which often do play 30+ hours/week.

  6. @Peter

    See, now you’re starting to get into our world. The most oft-asked question for us is “what is a casual gamer” and it’s not an easy answer. Obviously Rad and I are extremely different gamers. However (no matter what snarky comment CRR puts in the show notes about me POSING as a casual gamer 🙂 ) I am a casual gamer because 1: I will never commit to raid times because I often am called away from my computer at a moments notice, 2: I sometimes log in for 30 seconds just to check my sales and auction stuff, and then leave for the day, and 3: I play a TON of solo stuff.

    I’m clearly one of those casual by force kinda guys. Would I like to play 25 hours a week? Sure. Can I? No. I can barely be counted on to be in a group if its going to last more than 45 minutes because I don’t want to be the guy that has to leave, mid-group.

    Rad on the other hand, well, he’s casual in all regards. He’d put this freaking game in a browser on his phone if he could. Watch out for guys like that. And don’t let him fool you about this whole “oh, I’m so clueless, I’m just going to push random buttons.” He’s playing you. This guy has been gaming since atari.

  7. Ya, it’s definitely way too simplistic to even use terms like “hardcore” and “casual.”

    In my view defining them is probably a combination of attitude and time spent. I think you can have a hardcore casual who doesn’t have unlimited hours to play but when he does play, it’s serious. He strives for a high level of achievement in the hours he has. If he does do group content, he is prepared and is never the one asking for bandages or buff food. I think that describes Sunny…and myself, actually.

    Carla might be a casual hardcore. She devotes lots and lots of hours and is a committed raider, but not to the same level as the top raiding guilds. Plus, she always says things like “Real life comes first.” You would never hear that in Vent in the super hardcore groups.

    That’s funny about Rad. Does he play actual browser games? Because I have a friend who plays only Zynga games and she’s WAY more hardcore about Farmville than I am about any game I’m playing right now!.

  8. I was just looking again at David Bass’ Dev Tracker post about getting into testing. He actually does word it so that it sounds like everyone who registered on the site will receive an invite, not everyone who registered and also requested to be in testing.

    http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?p=10781627#edit10781627

    I don’t know if he just had the same brain stutter that I did, tho.

  9. @Sunny

    Well, the “I’m so clueless” thing is pretty much me. I’ve never played an mmo before (well 30 minutes of Galaxies about 2 years ago, but does that really count?), and if I sound like I know what I’m talking about, it’s because I listen the fine ladies here so much. 🙂

    @Kathy

    Yes, that line is very blurry. It’s more like a scale rather than a straight divide between casual and hardcore. There are varying degrees of both in between.

  10. @Peter: I, too, played 30 minutes of SWG! And it was spent entirely in the character creator hehe.

  11. Haha! I just did a bunch of quests on the space station, with my friend who actually played the game telling me to push this button or that button.

  12. Another good episode. I really liked the great conversation and thoughtful insight on this one. I’ve been listening to Sunny’s Diner from the beginning and really enjoy their podcast. I’m glad to hear them on CRR.

    @Kathy

    I take it you couldn’t talk Stephen Reid into reading?
