Photo-Receptor Focus on:  Technical Issues

by Maer

Well, here we are almost a month in on one of the most anticipated games ever and so far, SWTOR is mostly delivering as promised.  The stories are awesome, as I’ve said before.  I’m loving my characters and the quests.  There are so many things I love about the game, but I do have some technical issues that I hope Bioware will address sooner rather than later.

More after the jump

The bugs can be frustrating at times, but I have been luckier than some of my friends.  I feel for them, especially those who have class quests that bug out and require research to see how to fix them.  We had that happen recently and it did add about thirty minutes because we needed to reset the quest.

The jumping mechanic can be wonky at times.  It feels “off” from what I expect.  A friend and I spent hours getting datacrons that required jumping up on things.  It took awhile on each jump to find the right “spot” and then often my jump simply didn’t work.  After practicing, ( a lot of practicing) I definitely got better, but it still took hours to get those things.  I’d much rather jump down than up, though.

One of the most time-consuming things that I hope gets changed/fixed very soon has to do with the guild functionalities.  In fact, guild functionality is one of the weakest aspects of the game.

Several things about the guild roster are annoying.  You can see the member note, officer note, or last login time, but not all at the same time.  It also flips you out of your spot any time someone logs on or off.  That makes it kind of tough when you’re doing guild work with your roster.  Also it would be nice if the list would scroll.  The slider can be a pain at times.  And having to reset the UI to get the roster to show all the names is another time waster.

Now, these probably don’t sound like such a big deal, but when you are dealing with eight hundred plus members with two guilds for mains and a third for alts, it’s really a pain.

And yes, I still hope for the guild cap to be raised.  Going back and forth between the guilds does get old at times.

My guild still desperately needs a guild bank.  That is more necessary than I think Bioware realizes.  Trying to keep everything stored and trying to get it to members is an exercise in creativity for our Assets Officer.  Fortunately, he’s a great guy and handles the task heroically, but I feel for him having to use alts to store guild items.  Not to mention, no one can see if there’s something they can use because it’s all on an alt.  Not very convenient and I really, really hope this is a top priority for Bioware.

As much as I love the game itself, as an officer dealing with a lot of guild aspects, I waste a lot of time because the functionalities I mentioned are either broken or don’t exist.

I do encourage anyone who experiences bugs and such to respectfully let Bioware know about it.  They can’t fix it if they don’t know it’s broken, so it’s up to us to let them know.

That’s my two credits worth.  What’s yours?  How are the technical aspects in your game play?

Ready, set, discuss…

  1. Good post! I subscribe to all of Maer’s points (plus, I am a guildmaster also and I’d just love to have a guild banker position to fill :D).

For other bugs, I’d direct other readers to the SWTOR.com forum, which has loads of threads on how this game doesn’t work for them. Anything from class quest bugs, to client issues, class imbalances and many more, game-breaking for some or less so for others. The, by now famous, ability delays/character responsiveness issue has passed the point of 4 closed threads worth of forum pages (over 2,000) filled with links, accounts and (mostly) quality debating. The forum search feature is still disabled (and we want it back a.s.a.p. :D), but this huge “dossier” is easy to find, since it’s stickied, and still receives new posts every day.

I must say this, though: just glancing over the hundreds of pages of bug-reports makes one wonder “Just how many bugs must be out there?” But, in my honest opinion, this still feels like one of the smoothest launches in MMO history. And not only because for every bug report post there are at least 2 or 3 game-supporters’ posts. But even when reporting a bug, some people might add how they still appreciate SW:ToR for this and that reason. The game is still great with all those bugs, but we’re sure it can – and will – get better. BioWare is listening it’s community. Sure, there are haters, but the game’s Support work is picking up. So I’m hopeful.

I sense the Force is strong with this game.

  2. I had a piece entitled “30 Issues in 30 Levels” but didn’t publish as it needed to be changed to “35 Issues in 35 Levels” before I even began the first draft. While collecting and organizing my new data BW issued a patch that cleared a few issues up. By the time “36 Issues in 40 Levels” was ready for it’s final draft another patch negated a few of my points.

Ultimately I’m satisfied that BW is making progress clearing up bugs, annoyances, and other issues that detract from gameplay. I just really hope they don’t distract them too much from adding new things like guild banks, legacy levels, and the ability to browse the GTN without your companion mission complete window kicking you out…

…Oh, and it would be nice if they added more aluminum nodes. I’m always short on aluminum unless I do the Revanite missions…
…and when “Death from Above” shows up red on the ground indicating that you can trigger the attack, as opposed to white which means you can’t apply it there, only to have it blink off with a nice message that pops up – “Too close”…
    …and why can’t I hide my companions headslot item?…
…and why do I have to reapply guard every time I go down an elevator or demount?…
…and follow player doesn’t work on LAN linked players and needs to be fixed for my son’s sake…
…and the camera get’s momentarily stuck in elevated positions…
…and all of my normal mouse-bound buttons on the quickbars say “mouse”…
…and relics keep disappearing from my quickbars…
…and the fact that some missions are not abandonable even when grey…
…and I have to reset my zoom level every time I change zones…
…and sometimes I have 4 crew skills that show up in my CS window…
    …and error 9000…
…and “not ready yet” needs to be on toggle…
…and having a mail memory of your alts would be nice…
…and my crafting window says I can make “0” when I clearly have mats for quite a few…
…and Krysta Markon stares at my “privates”…
…and there are still noncollectable nodes…
…and some mobs evade for no apparent reason…
…and if I want to send 4 companions on the same skill missions I have to open the window 4 times…
    …and Huttball…
    …and Huttball…
    …and Huttball…
    …and Toovee needs to STFU.

    But that’s about it…

    …for now…

… and I love this game!
