Sith or Jedi:  Test of The Insomniac

After going to bed at a reasonable hour you have to get up at around 2am to do whatever it is people have to do at 2am.  You finish what you’re doing and lie down in bed, close your eyes and find that you’re fighting sleep like a professional boxer hopped on up on ten gallons of caffeine.  Swimming through your head is ALL that you have to accomplish before you leave on vacation in two days, none of which has gotten done, including cleaning the house. What do you do?

  1. Quietly name the titles of as many books as you can in your head until you wear your brain out and go to sleep.
  2. Play mindless puzzle games on your tablet or computer until you get so tired you have to fall to sleep.
  3. Beat yourself senseless, while calling yourself names making you fear that you’ve actually successfully moved over into the zone of crazy.

  1. I loved the not so subtle hinting that Dulfy is probably being fed information by developers.

For people who don’t know, there used to be a very active very good forum known as Sithwarrior.com (the forum is still up and has lots of great information). Sithwarrior.com had (has?) a chat room that was frequented by power explorers of the game. People who data mine and run sampling and try to solve things. Developers of the game would come in and talk about the behind the scenes mechanics, or explain certain things. Dulfy is well known to have frequented this chatroom.

The implication is that Dulfy is receiving special treatment from developers he has relationships with. This includes the community spotlight, but it also includes advice for what to look for in the files or where to go in the game so he can write good articles on the subject.

Bioware is not the only company that does stuff like this. This is a fairly routine practice, but can get out of hand if the game has money involved or is played professionally. This kind of feeding mechanism and content delivery mechanism are useful, but it is in no way fair. Especially to other fan sites. It can encourage some bad behavior on the part of developers who seek out only a select group of players for high level feedback. Further, it can result in laziness, as is the case here, where the devs may not work to make their content as easy to grok as it could be, because they know you’ll just look up the answer. Reminds me of how people used to make video games 25 years ago. Games were intentionally harder so you’d be ‘forced’ to buy a strategy guide.

Of course, it might just be that Dulfy is just like, you know, *really freaking good and has an army of dudes waiting each morning for when the event might spawn, with an army of writers to put in how to do things*. It’s possible.

  2. I love love loved the event. I have to disagree with the comments made on the show about this event when it came to hints about it. I found the first part of the mission very easy since it was a giant glowing news pod in four different locations on the fleet. Once you click it, it actually popped a mission marker where you needed to go on Nar Shadaa. From there it was relatively easy to track most of the missions down. The best part of the whole event was the small details that were left to give hints as to where to go. A droid being broken down that if you hovered your mouse over it told you a little about where they came from, or a wookie being detained telling a story about where he had been. I would say the only thing about this even that brought me down a little was the actual awards from the vendor. No force user weapons, and no blasters. Very disappointed in that. Anyway love hearing your opinions and insights every week. see ya
