HoloNet Links #73

The calendar year keeps flying by faster and faster it seems. Hard to believe this is already the third week in November. For all of you in the United States of America, we want to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. This past week has been all about Patch 1.5 and the Free-To-Play option coming to Star Wars: The Old Republic. I have been amazed the number of people I have seen in-game. Just last night there were 5 instances of Dromund Kaas! Welcome to SWTOR to those of you returning or those playing it for their first time.

New content on PTS, fan fiction & gift ideas after the Jump…

CourtneyWoods Scheduled Maintenance: November 27th, 2012 | 11.21.2012, 02:20 PM

Hello everyone, we wanted to let you know that we will be performing scheduled maintenance for four hours on Tuesday, November 27th, 2012 from 2AM CST (12AM PST/3AM EST/8AM GMT/9AM CET/7PM AEDT) until 6AM CST (4AM PST/7AM EST/12PM GMT/1PM CET/11PM AEDT). All game servers, SWTOR.com, and the launcher will be offline during this period. This maintenance is expected to take no more than four hours, but could be extended.
This maintenance is done in order to make general improvements and to check performance of the game so that we can continue to provide a consistent, quality experience. Quite often (but not always) after a maintenance period there will be a patch to download. After the maintenance, please login via the launcher to download the latest patch. If your launcher was open during the maintenance, you must close and reopen it for a fresh login.
Scheduled Maintenance
Date: Tuesday, November 27th, 2012
Time: 2AM CST (12AM PST/3AM EST/8AM GMT/9AM CET/7PM AEDT) until 6AM CST (4AM PST/7AM EST/12PM GMT/1PM CET/11PM AEDT)
All game servers, SWTOR.com, and the launcher will be offline during this period. This maintenance is expected to take no more than four hours.
Thank you for your patience as we maintain service for Star Wars™: The Old Republic™.

Here is a heads up for the next scheduled maintenance on November 27th, this next Tuesday. Be sure you are in a safe area to logout and not in the middle of a Flashpoint, Heroic, or Operation. This goes for new and veteran players alike. I know that I have been caught in the middle of a quest or instance only to see the 15 minute warning flash up on the screen. So save your stims, XP boosts and logout in plenty of time.

  • Patch 1.6 is on PTS

Just as some of us are getting a chance to get into the new content of Patch 1.5, BioWare has added Patch 1.6 to the Public Testing Server. In the latest news article on the official SWTOR site, they are talking about this new patch being added for members of the community to go and test. This new addition of content is primarily focused on PVP and along those lines a whole new warzone…the Ancient Hypergates. This warzone has a new type of objective in order to win this particular warzone. The article states:

“Travel to a remote Warzone to discover a brand new PvP battle mechanic. The Republic and Imperial forces are locked in an intense conflict to control two energy pylons. Fight to take control of these powerful pylons and kill enemy forces to discharge energy into your faction’s gate. The first team to open their portal unleashes deadly reinforcements to wipe out enemy players. But beware, those who attempt to control these objective points may find them to be a bit volatile!”

I did see some videos from Gamescom and this warzone appeared to be a bit smaller, which means less standing and guarding objectives…from the looks of things those who enter this warzone better be ready to fight, and honestly isn’t that why you go into a PVP warzone?

Now that is not the only thing you can find as far as new content in Patch 1.6. BioWare is also working on new level 50+ Heroic space missions. Not only are these missions designed to be harder, but as the article states, players can earn Black Hole Commendations for completing these heroic missions!

I would also encourage you to read up on the PTS patch notes for the new content. One simple, but helpful addition is the new tooltips on endgame commendations, like – Tionese, Columi, Black Hole, Daily commendations and also Tionese Crystals. These are now explained how you can get them and what they are used to buy. Now this may seem very self explanatory, but it is nice that they added something to end any confusion that some players, (me) have about these type of currencies. So for all you PVPers and starship captains, be sure to read the article and then login into the PTS and find out about all the new goodies they are offering in Patch 1.6.

  • SWTOR Fan Fiction

There are many wonderful fan fiction writers in the Star Wars and SWTOR communities, but I wanted to highlight the next segment from Mandalorian Girl’s ongoing story, titled Aiden. As we left things last time, Na’sha was in the presence in the home of a Sith Lord. We saw how she was trying to understand her feelings after learning this Sith Lord was in fact Aiden’s brother, a Jedi and more importantly a close friend. This segment picks things up from Aiden’s point of view. I am not going to give any spoilers, but this story’s plot is getting a lot deeper. Personally, this is some of her best work and I am really looking forward to seeing how this story turns out. Here is a small excerpt:

“From what Master Re’arde witnessed we believe it possible that Na’sha was a spy sent here by the Sith to infiltrate our ranks. We believe that she used and deceived you.”

“No, Masters! Na’sha is not a spy or a deceiver! Allow me to prove it to you, let me go and search for her.”

“No. You will not go after her. Her friends must leave immediately and you will not go with them.”

If you are not subscribed to her WordPress site I would suggest you do so and you can also see how this story will play out.

  • Star Wars Holiday Gift Ideas

As it grows closer to December, many of us will be looking to get some gifts for friends, co-workers, family, and maybe a guildmate…or maybe you are making your own list for Santa. I will, over the next few weeks, be bringing you a few Star Wars themed gifts ideas. From the wild and crazy to the simple stocking stuffer, even the “if money is no object” gifts, all to help you get that Star Wars fan in your life a special gift or links you can email as hints to family and friends.

Of course one of my favorite online stores is ThinkGeek.com and they always seem to have some of the wildest and most unique gifts out there, especially for the Star Wars fan. Below we have a few that might help your gift-giving needs.

This first one is perfect for those of us who live in the part of the world that has to deal with snow and ice on windows of our vehicles during the winter. Don’t scrape your windows with a normal ice scraper that can let snow or ice get in the top of your glove…you need the Star Wars Wampa Arm Ice Scraper.

Now that we have a gift to get their vehicle all cleared off and headed to work or to school, what are they going to use to bring their lunch? It has to be something durable, keep their food fresh and also has to have a cool factor. Why not give them the gift of the R2-D2 Lunch Bag. Not only does it keep food fresh and durable, it is also easy to clean, but to top it off it has lights and sounds just like everyone’s favorite astromech R2-D2.

Okay, so while those gifts were all cool Star Wars themed gifts they still fell under practical and it’s not Christmas to me unless I give something just wild, cool and not necessarily essential 🙂 That is where the wall mounted Lightsaber room light comes in to fit the criteria. On top of being an iconic symbol from the Star Wars franchise the lightsaber room lights also add that certain “geek” mood lighting…oh and it is remote controlled. A wall mounted Lightsaber that is over 2 feet long, has sound effects, and a remote control all of which equals cool factor 9 and sure to bring smiles for the Star Wars fan on your gift list.
