When you are designated a role in an operation that doesn’t mean that is the only thing you should do. Having a mentality that you will only do your assigned role is a sure way to get stuck in progression. Sometimes you have to think out of the box and take a look at your other powers and abilities to see what will be the best solution to get past hurdles. The statement of “That’s not my job.” has no place in an operation where teamwork is paramount.

In tight DPS races it never hurts if a healer tosses in some damage as long as the healing is light such as the walker down phases of Warlord Kephess. They may only be able to do 5000 damage in total, but it may be just enough to avoid one of those 1% wipes. In the same vein, dps should never shy away from healing themselves if time and resources allow to take the strain off healers. A good example of this is during the Soa encounter as you are platforming to the next phase. Damage is being taken as you drop from platform to platform and this can get stressful for the healers to top everyone off. You can help your healers immensely by topping yourself off during this phase. Especially you Sorcerer/Sages out there! You with your fancy free heals!

Take a close look at your utility abilities and think about when some of them could be useful in operations. We’ve used the Operative Infiltrate ability to sneak past trash mobs. Sorcerer/Sages have that useful Extricate ability to pull people out of harms way… or into danger if your Sorcerer likes to play shenanigans like ours does! Several classes have knockback abilities for those times where you can knock trash mobs off the edge. Juggernaut/Guardians have a great ability that allows them to jump to operation members. This ability is meant to be used to pull agro off an ops member, but think outside the box for a moment for other ways it can be used. A good example brings us back to the Soa fight where the Juggernaut/Guardian can leap to safety if they happen to be caught in the center as the platform drops away.

The point I am trying to make is that every advanced class brings their own unique utility powers to the operation. They may not seem particularly useful if you read their mundane description, but think about other ways in which they can be utilized. I can’t tell you how many times the simple ‘taunt’ ability has come in handy for me as a DPS. Whether it be to pull a mob off a healer or to temporarily ‘hold’ a boss while a tank is rezzed. It is one power I would never expect to use and, yet, it is an ability that has been incredibly useful in operations.

I hope that this encourages you to take a moment and examine your skills more closely. Perhaps you will discover an ability that you may be able to use in an operation that might make encounters easier for your teammates. They may not seem like much, but sometimes even the smallest contributions can make the biggest difference. Have fun and Happy New Year to all of you!
