SITH OR JEDI: Test of the Unyielded Right-of-way

You are trying to leave a crowded grocery store parking lot. You have two tubs of ice cream in your trunk, it is 87° F. outside, and you have been sitting in a line to get out for about ten minutes. As you finally are second-in-line to get out, you notice that there is a car waiting in a side-access lane perpendicular to yours. They are angled in such a way that they could get between you and the car in front of you that is about to turn out of the parking lot. Do you:

  1. Let them get in front of you. They have been waiting too, and you have been waiting long enough that the ice cream is probably melted anyway.
  2. Pretend to be jiving along to non-existent music that is so distracting, you wouldn’t possibly notice anyone trying to cut in front of you. Pull up as close as you can to the car in front of you to deny the person access.
  3. Pretend to wave the other car forwards, then right before they start moving, honk and gun your engine to get in front of them. Sure they are just an octogenarian couple with a small Pomeranian in the back window, but it serves them right for being stupid enough to attempt to take a shortcut that dead ends at traffic. Besides, if they hit you, it is their fault and you get the insurance money to pay for that new bumper that you wanted after you pulled forward too far in your garage.

  1. The word I was looking for at 1:21:20 was “nostalgic” LOL!

  2. I have to say that I find the attitude of people saying “Bioware, don’t force me to do x” has always puzzled me. “Don’t force me to PvP to complete a quest” or “I only want to PvP so don’t make me do PvE dailies”. There are many ways to play this game, but there seems to be this idea that no matter how you play it, you should be able to be equal to everybody else and given access to everything.

To which my typical response is “Be a complete player if you want to have access to the complete game”. Don’t complain about how you want to get X item, which you can only get by doing Y and you think it’s unfair because you only want to do Z.

I thought the PvE/PvP blended solution of the Gree event was a fairly decent way of going about providing something for everybody. The fact that so many complained about having to go into a PvP area to finish a quest seemed ridiculous to me. If you hate it that much, then you don’t have to do it, and you don’t have to get everything possible out of the event. If you want to complete the event all the way, then you need to find a way to do all the activities of the event. If it’s something that isn’t your strong suit, then you find ways to get around your handicap. But insisting that it be changed because you don’t like to do it and you want to get one extra reputation item per day just smacks of “gimme gimme gimme”.

I don’t see a better model for attempting to bring PvP elements into a server-wide event than what the Gree did, unless you completely revamp the whole game. I don’t think it’s fair to tell Bioware “what you did stunk and I’m mad about it, but I don’t know what to do differently to make it better, just make it better”.

In general, I guess that I’m pretty happy with SWTOR. I casually raid once a week, run dailies a few times a week, and PvP enough to keep me competitive on random queues. I don’t sweat it if I miss out on things occasionally and just try to enjoy the experience. As opposed to some people that seem to believe Bioware is ruining their life because they have been singled them out for unfair treatment. “It’s not fair, I deserve more” is the resounding refrain of the modern gamer which I believe will destroy the gaming industry. I was a little surprised to hear Carla take such a unwavering negative stance (Translation: whine 🙂 ) on the current 2.0 Operative changes. Exfiltrate is not as flashy as some of the other things, but for PvP utility it’s fantastic. Most of the new abilities were trying to address specific PvP shortcomings, but in addition to that Operatives get a passive regeneration boost which combined with the Alacrity changes completely benefits the resource management of the class, particularly for PvE healers. Juggernauts/Guardians are the only others to receive a passive resource buff, and you can’t overestimate the “passive” part of it. The mental and finger dance that already happens with the overload of abilities is pretty frantic, adding in more…. The fact that Operatives get a straight significant boost, without a single button press or one iota of attention goes a long way in my eyes.

Hope you enjoy the 2.0 changes more as you use them more Carla, adios!

  3. Finally a PVPer, I always felt underrepresented when I listen to SWTOR podcasts, the hosts will always be talking about them raids.

Some things that I would love to see that should not take a huge ammount of time to implement (compared to new content):

A “kill X ammount of players” daily as a part of the Gree Event.
Outlaws then dailies (and possibly reputation)

    And in the long run:

    Cross server que
Large scale warzones, like 15 vs 15, or more if possible, since we have already given up all hope to see anything like RvR

  4. @Chaz Thanks for your comments!
I will admit, I’m not a PVPer, but I do like your ideas! BioWare has said a player can level how they want right? So why not have PVP dailies and allow PVPers to run dailies their way. I also love the idea to utilize Outlaws Den.
Thanks again for your comments and listening to the podcast!
