This past week we have had several posts on the SWTOR site about Galactic Starfighter, including a couple of dev blogs about a couple of different starship roles. The first role was discussed in an article by Bret Hoffman. He talked about the Scout Class starships. As Bret talks about in the article, the Scout Class starships are built for speed and maneuverability. This role of ship can get you to that objective really quickly or get you out of trouble in a hurry.

Besides speed and maneuverability, the Scout Class ships can also be outfitted with different sensor pods and rocket pods. The sensor pods allow you to help communicate enemy locations to other teammates, for example, the rocket pods are great for making quick strafing runs at enemy defense turrets/drones.

The other dev blog, by Brian Audette, is all about the Strike Fighter Class ship. I would like to think of this class as the multi-purpose starship. They truly excel in starship vs. starship combat, but depending on the weapons equipped on your Strike Fighter, it can also fill the role of taking down defense turrets and enemy drones. The one difference between Strike Fighters and Scouts is fighters being able to switch their primary weapon. As Brian mentions his favorite loadout consists of Ion Cannons and Quad Lasers as primary weapons. Ion Cannons to take down shields and then Quad Lasers to blast apart the hull, Brian also utilizes secondary weapons like Cluster Missiles to finish the enemy off.

I expect there will soon be a dev blog out about the Gunship and Bomber Class starships. Bottom line with any of these classes, just like the ground game in SWTOR, each has their role, but also depends which you prefer playing.   • Galactic Starfighter Closed Beta

Now that the NDA has been lifted I can talk about my time playing the new expansion, Galactic Starfighter, coming to SWTOR. It was close to the end of the closed beta, but I did manage to get in a couple weekends of “cockpit” time in the new expansion hmmm or better yet side game. This is a completely different style of gameplay SWTOR has seen. I was curious how they would be able to pull it off and I can say that they have brought me back to my days of playing the old X-Wing games!

Look…no rails!

As most of you know, I am not a PVPer at all, other than the occasional guild event or getting caught in Outlaws Den alone. However, I loved PVP in Galactic Starfighter! Did I die a lot? LOL heck yes, I died a lot, but I had so much fun. Honestly, this brought back the joys of raiding player cities in Star Wars Galaxies. It takes a little bit of time to get use to the controls, but probably the biggest learning curve is the added dimension of above and below. When the expansion goes live for some on December 3rd, less than two weeks away, I suggest going through the tutorial to get familiar with controls and how free-form-flight feels.

Although, I really like this new expansion and what I was able to do in the closed beta testing, there are still a few areas I think that can be improved. The performance of 12 vs. 12 was better than I expected, but they are “space” battles and to me there was not enough space. In my opinion, with the speed of the starships and the amount of objects to avoid or use as cover, warrants a bigger map. The other area I was worried about was whether there would be any matchmaking system, because when I had my first combat, in my new fighter, I felt like my armor was made of paper. This past week, Eric Musco posted that there would be a form of matchmaking so those not getting the expansion till later would not be cannon fodder for those getting to start playing on December 3rd. The matchmaking system leads me to the other area that might be an issue for Galactic Starfighter matches and that is being able to use a different ship during a match. Yes, I do see that there are benefits to having access to multiple ships, but I for see matches going like this, especially those in a premade of four:

Two or three of those people will use their scout ships and have their engines maxed out, they could potentially take two satellites without a shot fired. The other two or one takes Bombers and drop several drones. The other teammates, not in the premade, would only have to occupy and engage the enemy. By this time the high-speed Scouts have been killed, so they come back in their Strike Fighters to maintain control of the captured satellites.


I think it would be easier for matchmaking to have players to pick their starship and use that for the match. If there wasn’t the skills trees for components and it just boiled down to players needing to unlock new starships then use whatever ship you wanted and switch whenever you die. That would eliminate the customization, so I am for single starship matchmaking.

The last thing that was a bit disappointing was some of the crew member choices BioWare made. I don’t mind Blizz or Broonmark being part of the crew, but it was a pain to use any crew member that did not speak Basic. You would be flying along, and yes I could hear the missile lock beep, and then a droid or crew member that didn’t speak Basic would flash a subtitle along the bottom of the screen. If you look down to read, bang you’re dead lol. I find it hard to believe that with all the crew members on both factions that do speak Basic, they are not in the mix. I don’t make up some sort of technology that allows me to hear what they say without trying to read subtitles and fly.



  • Galactic Starfighter ship build calculator

I mentioned the skill trees for components above, it just so happens that I came across Galactic Starfighter ship build calculator on Dulfy’s website. First, you pick the ship and then you go to the next tab across the top and so on and so on, until you get every component and crew member exactly how you want them. You then can go back to the first tab and see how the ship’s stats have improved with your choices. Once you have everything set you can get a link, so you can share your build in the forums or possibly share with fellow guild members.

  • Anniversary Scout Ship Paint Jobs

While we are discussing the Galactic Starfighter expansion, BioWare posted an article about two paint schemes for Scout Class ships in celebration for the upcoming Two Year Anniversary of the launch of SWTOR. The brief article did not say when these paint schemes would be released, but they did say they would be for all players! Once more details are announced we will make sure you have the information and link to the article.

  • PVP Event on the Prophecy of the Five server

In one of our recent Community Checkpoints, we highlighted the guild The Exiled Hand. This guild is hosting a PVP event this Sunday, November 24th, 1013 at 9:30PM EST. This is the guild’s most recent addition to their “Maltheus’ Happy Hour” events. What makes these events fun, from my interview with them, is they usually make sure to have their favorite beverage on hand.
