HoloNet Links #177
This marks the first week that the planets Rishi and Yavin 4 are involved in the Galactic Conquest. Besides adding two new planets that guilds may battle over, I like how the Weekly quest on Yavin 4 is included. Actually the number of various ways players can earn Conquest points this week seems increased. Of course that is not the only changes beginning this week. Later in this article we will discuss changes to the slot machine payouts. There is also a video by Vulkk on keybinds and UI tips.
All this & more after the Jump…
- SWTOR streamer offers some tips
If any of you follow the SWTOR Twitch streams, you may also be familiar with one particular streamer, he goes by Vulkk. I have enjoyed his leveling and operation streams/videos for a long time. Earlier this week he has uploaded a video to YouTube about keybinds and UI tips. I’m sure some of you might have seen it mentioned in the SWTOR reddit by arnakke. Vulkk does a great job of explaining keybinds and the importance them.
I thought the video was well done, especially how he grouped abilities on his skill bars. If you are curious about keybinds or looking to pick up a few tips to help improve your gameplay, I highly recommend this video. After you watch the video, be sure to let Vulkk know what you thought about the video or maybe you have a particular keybind you would like to share.
- PTS for 3.1 is closed
As of maintenance this morning, PTS for 3.1 is closed.
These forums have been locked and will be purged in a day or two, once we’ve had a bit more time to get through all the information.
Thank you for participating and for your feedback! Next up is 3.1.1, and I’ll have more details as we get closer to that.
It appears the PTS has been closed. Update 3.1 started on the PTS January 8th. I’m no expert developer or tester, but I am surprised that they have brought down the PTS already. I understand needing time to go through all the bug reports and forum feedback, but would it really hurt to keep it up and running? In the post, Tait mentions it will be opened for Update 3.1.1. Why not keep it open now through 3.1.1 testing? There must be reasons for closing the PTS, but I’m struggling to understand what those reasons could be.
Did you get on the PTS to test Update 3.1? If not, why? Would you be more willing to help test if there were some sort of incentive, like a title or special pet for helping to test? Please let us know your thoughts on the Public Test Server below in the comment section.
- dev notes
We completed the investigation into the 16-Player Story Mode loot drops, and it does appear that they are not correct. We are aiming to get this fixed in 3.1.
The irony of them looking to fix the loot drops in 16-man Ops is not lost, especially after reading about the PTS being closed for Update 3.1 testing. This is why I think the PTS should be kept up longer to test for these bugs and also to test potential fixes. Okay that said, here is hoping the loot drops do get fixed to help with groups doing operations, specifically those using Group Finder.
First, as Tait alluded to we will be having a maintenance tomorrow, on Wednesday the 21st. We didn’t have our regular Tuesday maintenance due to the federal holiday here in the states. I wanted to let you know a few of the things coming in tomorrow’s patch:
- Item rarity borders will now show properly
- No more getting stuck in Blood Hunt if someone dies to Jos or Valk Beroya
- The Underlurker will no longer rush extremely quickly back to his target after leaping
- There have been adjustments made to the Contraband Slot Machine (more on this in a second)
- There is also one other fix, check the final patch notes for more info
Let’s talk about the changes coming to the Contraband Slot Machine. When we were going into 3.0.2, we wanted to make Grade 11 materials more accessible to more players than they were at the time. As you know, we simultaneously put in the Contraband Slot Machine, which afforded you a fairly good chance to get Jawa Junk and other Jawa vendor scrap parts. This had two effects:
- It had the risk of taking the Grade 11 material costs in the economy, in the long term, to a price below where we would like
- It created a situation where it could be more profitable to completely ignore crew skills by use of the Slot Machine
With those in mind, we decided to make the following changes, which will be live tomorrow:
- The drop rate on all Jawa scraps, has been greatly reduced
- The drop rate on Contraband Reputation items, has been increased
- To insure that the Slot Machine is still an awesome item to strive for, we have added a faction specific walker mount as a very rare drop
- Lastly, we have increased the cost of each Slot Machine coin from 500 to 750 credits. It was always our intent that the coin cost would increase over time as we add more Slot Machines that accept the coin
First off, there are some great fixes in this patch from Wednesday. The UI fix for borders has been fixed, also they fixed the getting stuck in Blood Hunt and I’m sure many are happy to hear some more fixes for the Underlurker fight.
Of course the main reason this patch has been talked about in-game, in the forums and on various social media sites has to do with the changes in drop-rate for Jawa junk dropping from the slot machines. If people are looking for a good explanation as to why they did this, I would suggest listening to the Escape Pod Cast #74. Max and Sema do a great job at breaking down this issue and interestingly enough they predicted this change during the podcast episode.
Long story, short as the dev post states the previous drop-rate was causing crew skills to be ignored. That is not what was intended by the Jawa junk pay-outs anyway. Will we miss the cheaper prices on Grade 11 crafting materials? Yes, but I feel that the price will not go back up as high as it was before the slot machines were introduced in-game. Hopefully this new drop-rate will strike a balance. What are your thoughts on the whole Jawa junk drop-rate? Let us know your opinions in the comment section below.

- SWTOR music video
This week we have another SWTOR music video. The video was posted by CipherAgentFour. The user name fits as the video just happens to be a salute to the Imperial Agent. The video showcases several of the cutscenes found throughout this great class story. The video’s creator definitely understands the spy element of the Imperial Agent as the music video has almost a spy movie trailer feel. Having been a fan of the Agent class story, I feel this music video does the class justice and fits perfectly as a salute to this SWTOR class. Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think in the comment section below.
Please let us know if you have a particular link, story, video, or topic related to SWTOR we would love to hear about it!
