Class Quests: What EA President Probably Meant by Two Hundred Hours Per Class

In an interview over at gameindustry.biz, EA President Frank Gibeau said the following about The Old Republic:

You look at a game that has 200 hours of gameplay for each of the six classes, and that doesn’t include the crafting, the raids, the multiplayer. It’s vast. It’s a gigantic game.”

EA Games is kicking off E3 a day early with a live press conference today at 12:30 pm PDT/3:30 EDT.  They are expected to talk about their three much-anticipated titles, Mass Effect 3, Battlefield 3, and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Watch the conference live at EA, IGN, and Gamespot (we like Gamespot’s page because there’s a countdown in the video window).

More doom and gloom coverage for SWTOR

Market analyst Mike Hickey of Janco Partners told Gamasutra that he believes investors are “betting against SWTOR achieving market success.”  Among the potential problems Hickey cites: the difficulty of breaking into the MMO market; the failure of EA’s last MMO, Warhammer Online; SWTOR’s monthly subscription model at a time when free-to-play and microtransactions are increasingly popular.  Read full article here.

At the UBS Annual Media and Communications Conference in New York, EA Games CFO Eric Brown told Eurogamer.net that SWTOR looks to financial success by taking the long view.  “Our assumptions for break-even and profitability are not seven digit subscribers,” said Brown.  “We think we can run and operate a very successful and profitable MMO at different levels.”

If you don’t know about these guys, you should.  Extra Credits at Escapistmagazine.com do animated videos which discuss various aspects of video gaming.  Their most recent video, “Project Ten Dollar,” talks about the issues of pricing games, what developers get paid, used game sales, downloadable content, and EA Games Project Ten Dollar.  Their talks are well-informed and insightful, while the animation brings the subject matter to life in an entertaining manner.
