To those of us who followed the Gamescom and PAX news at home, the two events may seem like one huge event. To the lucky people who got to go to either one, however, the two shows have produced very different memories. Today, we get a taste of what it was like to check out The Old Republic at GamesCom, full of cosplayers, T-shirt throwing, and German fans.

It seems a bit strange that we didn’t also get the PAX highlights video, but perhaps we’ll have that soon. Either way, while we didn’t get a release date at either event, we get one step closer to playing SWTOR every day.

A look at the Star Wars Insider Revan novel excerpt, focusing on how Revan’s character will be handled in SWTOR and the novel.

This article contains SPOILERS for the 2003 game Knights of the Old Republic.

Who is Revan? Everyone who has played KotOR (Knights of the Old Republic) has a different answer to that question. Like with Commander Shepard in Mass Effect and the Hero of Ferelden and Hawke in the Dragon Age games, Bioware’s interactive dialogue system lets the players define Revan in any way they please. How, then, can the non-interactive Revan novel satisfy every fan of KotOR? How can one defined character of a book convey the infinite possibilities of Revan? With the first excerpt of the Revan novel in Star Wars Insider magazine, perhaps our questions can be answered.

Strike me down and... oh wait, I'm a companion, you can't, lol.

On Bioware’s added companion customization and removed companion killing

If you haven’t heard yet, a few big changes to the Companion system were announced at Comic-Con: you can customize their physical appearance, do some new things with their AI, and you can no longer kill them permanently through your story. All three of these things were responses to player feedback in testing, but it’s interesting to note that while the first two give the player a larger degree of freedom and flexibility, the last removes an option that several people were excited for. Why did these changes occur, and what does it mean for player freedom and choice?

It’s a big day for the eighth of Old Republic fans who plan on playing the Jedi Consular. Now that they’ve waited in excruciating pain every time the other seven class videos went up on the site, they find that the wait’s been worth it. In my opinion, the Consular class trailer is one of the best that Bioware’s made (but maybe that’s because the Consular fits my personality more than the Knight). It highlights the calm strength of the Consular both in combat and glimpses of story points, with narration that seems a bit less cheesy than the ones for some of the other classes. Developer walkthroughs. The videos that, above all the rest, make me feel like I’m almost playing the game. These are what keep my interest and anticipation at unprecedented levels for any game out there. Today’s Esseles walkthrough doesn’t disappoint, and it shows far more excitement in the interactive cinematics than any of its predecessors.
