Greetings my fellow gamers and Star Wars fans.  Welcome to another week of Force Lore!  While we celebrate the coming of Game Update 1.2, getting closer to release each and every day, we have to take a moment of silence for the departure of a dear friend to the Star Wars community, Ralph MacQuarrie.  The man that was responsible for designing Darth Vader, Chewbacca, and so many of the sets that brought the original trilogy to life will be missed.  Ralph was responsible for conceptual artwork on Battlestar Galactica and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial also.  Ralph passed on to become one with the Force on March 3, 2012, at the age of 82.  “May you live long and prosper, may you always find shade, and may the Force be with you, always.”  The Science Fiction world will miss you, Ralph.  Thank you for the lives you touched through your work.

The week is dedicated to Mr. MacQuarrie.  Without him, our beloved Star Wars Universe would look quite different.  While some of his conceptual work was changed to fit into the original trilogy, a lot of Ralph’s work would make it’s way into the Expanded Universe of Star Wars.  In Star Wars: The Old Republic, some of those conceptual designs can be seen, from the Sith Imperial Trooper design to the architecture of the Hutts.  Ralph’s vision of the space environments of Star Wars can be seen influencing the opening Flashpoint for the Republic, The Esseles.  So, strap in to your acceleration couch and let’s jump to this destination!

Welcome to a somewhat Special Edition of Force Lore, what would normally be your weekly trip through the histories of Star Wars and the lore of Star Wars: The Old Republic.  Instead of one, you’ve received two!  Today is a special day to celebrate love.  It’s that time of the year where you pull your sweetheart in close and show them just how much you love them.  With that being said, I think we should travel down Lover’s Lane and look at some of the great relationships that have taken place in Star Wars, especially those that affect SWTOR.  Set your navicomputers and let’s make the jump!

In his personal blog, Craig Morrison (Game Director of Age of Conan, currently working at Funcom) takes a look at what Star Wars: The Old Republic faces as it dips its toe into the MMO waters. Morrison reminds us how much the gaming industry has changed since Everquest and World of Warcraft first came on the scene, and wonders what will define a successful launch for SWTOR:

The game will most likely sell extremely well out of the gate, almost certainly the most successful first month sales of any MMO ever, and probably by a wide margin…it will then possibly even retain over a million subscription customers (something it should be remembered no game other than World of Warcraft has managed)…

A look at a few guild archetypes you will most likely see in Star Wars: The Old Republic

Historically speaking, RPGs have never been much of a social activity.  You could feasibly make a weekend out of inviting the guys over to hang out, have some beers and play some Halo.  I don’t think anyone would have nearly as fun a weekend if we did the same thing with Dragon Quest.  Considering the narrative and gameplay constructs of traditional RPGs, it would be like inviting someone over to read a book with you.  RPGs are a solitary past time, they’re generally meant to be a single-player experience.  Unless I can toss a friend a controller and ask if they want to join in, I feel rude playing a game in a social situation.
