HoloNet Links #25

We all may express our beliefs in different ways, but I would ask that everyone please keep your thoughts and prayers on those who are sick, having hardships, or have lost a friend or loved one. It is easy to forget about those things in the virtual game worlds or our day-to-day grind, but take a moment to remember, because nobody knows what the next moment will bring. “Today is a Gift, that is why it is called the Present.”

Today’s HoloNet Links is written with a heavy heart for a dear friend of mine. However, knowing him, he would say I was using this as an excuse and to just get it done…so on with the links. The first part focuses on what you need to do to keep playing Star Wars: the Old Republic. We will also look at what is going on in the community, but for now sit back and get ready to make the Jump.

More on what steps to do to keep playing, & much more after the Jump…

Dev notes

  • Hot Dev Tid Bits

Below is a post by Stephen Reid, outlining what every player must do in order to keep playing the game. If you have any questions or problems contact the customer service folks and see if they can help it get resolved. Also check out the other notes from David Bass concerning product codes not working and about Taris. Amber green also has updated about the customer support telephone issue is now fixed.

StephenReid General Discussion -> Get ready to play – activate your account

Get Ready to Play

After this maintenance period is completed, in order to continue playing Star Wars: The Old Republic you will need to have completed the following steps:

1) Create an account on SWTOR.com (if you have not already done so)

2) Within the ‘My Account’ section:

  • Complete your contact information
  • Add between three and five security questions on your account
  • Redeem an official Game Product Registration Code (not a pre-order code; see below)
  • Sign up for a subscription or enter a Pre-Paid Game Time Code

Once you have completed all of these steps, you’ll be ready to play once the servers come back up. You can complete these steps at any time before the maintenance begins, or afterwards if you prefer. Right now, approximately half of those who played in Early Game Access have completed these steps and are ‘ready to play’, so we’d encourage all of you to complete these steps as soon as possible.

If you have issues completing any of these steps, please contact Customer Service via support@swtor.com for assistance.

Forums ‘Read Only’ During High Load Period

When we bring SWTOR.com back up after maintenance, we’re expecting to see very high load as users complete their ‘ready to play’ steps as outlined above. As having everyone complete these steps and getting them back into the game is our highest priority, we have decided to keep the official Forums in ‘read only mode’, hopefully just for a few hours, until load subsides. (In other words, you will be able to read the Forums, but not make posts.)

If we experience unexpected load, we may take the Forums offline for a period. Remember, when we switch the Forums back to normal, you will not be able to post unless you have completed the steps listed above.

Here are answers to some questions you might have regarding the process:

What’s a ‘Game Product Registration Code’?

The Game Product Registration Code is the code provided with your retail or digital copy of Star Wars: The Old Republic. This code should be found inside the packaging of any retail edition of the game, or would have been emailed to you from Origin.com if you ordered a digital Standard or Deluxe Edition.

If you have purchased a retail copy of Star Wars: The Old Republic and find the Product Registration Code missing or unreadable please email support@swtor.com with the following details:

  • The subject “Product Code Proof” in your email title.
  • A detailed description of your problem.
  • Attach a scan of your proof of purchase (receipt). Please write the name of the account holder on the receipt. Please make sure that your name is clearly readable on the scan.
  • Customer Service will get back to you as soon as they can.

If you have purchased a digital copy of Star Wars: The Old Republic and find the Product Registration Code missing or unreadable please email support@swtor.com with the following details:

  • The subject “Product Code Proof” in your email title.
  • A detailed description of your problem.
  • Attach a scan of your proof of purchase (receipt). Please write the name of the account holder on the receipt. Please make sure that your name is clearly readable on the scan.
  • Customer Service will get back to you as soon as they can.

Why do I need to sign up for a subscription?

You first 30 days of Game Time are included in the purchase of any edition of Star Wars: The Old Republic, but you must add a valid payment method to activate your account. This method of payment varies by country, but includes most major credit cards plus ELV and Paypal (in some territories). Please visit our Billing and Subscription FAQ for more details. You can also activate your account using a Pre-Paid Game Time Card, available at most major retailers.

Whenever you activate your account, your 30 days of free Game Time will begin. When using a credit card, ELV or Paypal, you will not be billed for your second month of play until your 30 days of free Game Time is complete. You may cancel your subscription at any time in your first 30 days of play. Your unused Game Time will still be available on your account and you can still play until this expires.

DavidBass Customer Service -> Customer Service Done Right For Those Who Have Not Got Their Product Codes/ BigErrors

Thanks for your responses, everyone.

Those of you who say that the code appearing on Origin is the same as your pre-order code, has Origin actually charged you for your copy of the game yet? It’s possible they haven’t charged you, in which case you wouldn’t have a retail key at this point. If that’s what’s going on, you’ll want to contact Origin Support so they can assist you in making sure your purchase has gone through.

If you have checked and you have been actually charged by Origin, AND your Origin client’s serial key is not working on our site, please post and let me know.

DavidBass Customer Service -> Jedi Cosular travel advisory: stay away from Taris

If I’m reading this correctly, you’re both experiencing issues on Taris after last night’s patch, correct? Have you rebooted your game since the patch went out last night? If you haven’t, you won’t have picked up the patch and therefore you might still see the same problems.

If you have, I need to know the following information from you:

– Server Name
– Character Name
– Location you’re seeing the issues
– Quest you’re seeing the issues during (if applicable)

AmberGreen General Discussion -> Telephone Customer Support Unavailable
UPDATE: This issue has been resolved. Thank you for your patience.

  • Star Wars Fan Fiction

This week we get back to showing some fan fiction. This is one of my favorite writers, Mandalorian Girl. We pick up the story on Dantooine, her latest edition part 8. Below is a small excerpt from the piece. I strongly urge you to read this. Head on over to “The exploits of Mandaloriangirl” and subscribe! Just scroll down the page and on the right side look for archives and start at the beginning. Once you start, you will want to keep reading and eager for the next part! You can subscribe to her site and get the latest part in your email.

Before any of us could react, Scrapper had scurried ahead of us and around the corner. I felt my heart jump into my throat! Those creatures would tear him to ribbons!  We ran after him.

My heart thudded as I ran, praying we would reach him in time, dreading the sound of his screams if we didn’t.  If he survived this, I was going to kill him!

I, like many of you, have been playing Star Wars: The Old Republic. Hopefully, you are having as much fun as I am, so far. Despite a few minor issues with shipping and some customer support missteps, this has been a very smooth launch for such a huge game. Yes, there are still bugs and some issues needing to be patched, but all in all I feel it has gone well. What has your experience been like? Let us know in the comments below.

That’s all this week from the HoloNet Links. Many of us will be celebrating Christmas this weekend and many others spending time with family and friends enjoying the holiday time. I want to extend the warmest wishes to you all and may you all have a very safe and wonderful Christmas and Holidays!

If you have an interesting, funny, or thought provoking Star Wars Old Republic link, please let me know via email at jason@corellianrun.com, in the comments below, or in the Facebook group. See you next week!
